Buckman Tavern

Buckman Tavern played a key role in the Battle of Lexington and Concord, which set off the American Revolution. Before dawn on April 19, 1775, several dozen militiamen went to the tavern after learning the regular army left Boston to seize and destroy military supplies in Concord. Definite word that the British troops were coming reached them just before sunrise. Capt. John Parker’s company of militia left the tavern to assemble in two ranks on the common. Following the arrival of the army, a single shot was fired; by whom, it is still unknown. With this shot, the American Revolutionary War began

The Lexington Historical Society hosts rotating, special exhibitions each year at the Tavern, at Munroe Tavern and in the windows of Lexington’s CVS pharmacy at 1735 Massachusetts Avenue. The Hancock-Clarke House also features a permanent exhibition on slavery and freedom in 18th and early 19th century Lexington.

Tavern Night at Buckman Tavern is part of Revolution 250, a’ celebration of the semiquincentennial of the American Revolution. It also belongs to Massachusetts 250, which describes itself as follows:
