Witness to Revolution: Meet Hannah Mather, North Square Neighbor of the Revere Family

February 18 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

$6

Hannah Mather was 13 years old when she helped her uncle, Lt. Gov. Thomas Hutchinson, escape from the sacking of his mansion during the Stamp Act riots. Then at 22, she smuggled letters to Patriot leaders during the Siege of Boston.

Hear from Hannah herself (portrayed by Mehitabel Glenhaber) about her experiences coming of age in North Square in the tumultuous years leading up to the American Revolution. Performances at 1:00 p.m., 1:45 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. are included with the price of admission.

Hannah Mather

Born in 1752, Hannah Mather’s ancestors included the influential Puritan ministers Richard, Increase and Cotton Mather. Brought up in a religious environment, she had strong religious beliefs throughout her life.

Her father believed in the importance of educating women, which led to her passion for women’s rights. She received an extensive education in languages, history, theology and literature. Then as an adult, she wrote essays advocating women’s rights.

The Paul Revere House

The house was built in 1680 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1961. Paul Revere owned the house from 1770 to 1800, but he and his family may have lived elsewhere for periods in the 1780s and 1790s.

Throughout 2025, the Paul Revere House and other organizations plan to host a variety of events to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. However, the exact details of some of these planned events are still under development.
